CU-Boulder Judicial Affairs Proceedings

When a CU student has criminal charges filed against him or her—especially if filed by CU or Boulder Police—the university will often react by initiating a separate administrative proceeding against the student for violation of the student conduct code and/or other policies and procedures. This is true even when the criminal charges are not related to the university, other students or staff members or the campus itself. For more information on university policies and procedures, see www.colorado.edu/studentaffairs/judicialaffairs/index.html and http://housing.colorado.edu/elements/mnp/expect.cfm.

Depending on the circumstances, administrative proceedings initiated by CU may come via the Office of Judicial Affairs or through Housing and Dining Services. The timing and outcome of such proceedings are not in any way affected by the timing or outcome of the underlying criminal matters.

Sanctions taken by the university through an administrative proceeding may range from no action to expulsion. The university may also act with respect to a student's transcript, to include "freezing" access to or placing a disciplinary notation on the transcript. Often, the sanctions taken by the university have a more negative effect on a student than do sanctions taken by a court. If administrative proceedings are brought against you by the university, an experienced lawyer* can help you best present yourself during the proceedings to minimize any consequences.

*CU-Boulder students may qualify for reduced fee legal assistance through the university with both criminal matters and Judicial Affairs proceedings. Call 303.492.6813 or visit www.colorado.edu/studentaffairs/legal/ for more information on this student benefit.
